For the culture project, I focused on emerging Switzerland and Turkey with the designer Alaïa. For Switzerland, I was inspired by the traditional wear which has elements of corsets or shawls. I used specifically the traditional wear from the Italian side of Switzerland, Ticino as that is wear I grew up. Being half Turkish I always grew up with Turkish carpets. I chose to focus of Turkish carpets, due to the colours and the geometrical shapes. With the designer Alaïa, I took two themes from his early collections. These themes are the tight construction on the body, for example the coats he made. Along with this I wanted to focus on something more fluid which was his garments that were is fluid fabric. For the first garments, I created the coat by using the construction from Alaïa and the corset aspects from Swiss traditional wear. I wanted the construction to give a corset like style and I chose the navy colour that is present in Turkish carpets. My second garment is a top and skirt; with the top I was inspired by the shawls used in Swiss traditional wear and then a draped skirt that would be very fitting to the body. I created my own Turkish inspired carpet in order to create a print that I then put on satin polyester. I wanted to portray this mix between cultures and wear similarities are within and with the designer.
